WGAL-TV, the Hearst owned NBC affiliate in the Susquehanna Valley region of central Pennsylvania, has been producing news from the same set for the past 18 years. Presented with the opportunity to design a new studio environment, the WGAL team turned to FX Group to create a versatile, modern environment to present the news and to remain competitive in their market.
The design features a unique anchor desk that can be shot either off-axis or straight-on creating up to 8 different camera shots. The inclusion of a 2×2 zero-bezel monitor array on the Anchor Set back wall showcases the emphasis on technology while the multiple roll down duratrans in each the Camera Right and Camera Left walls allow the backgrounds to remain fresh and dynamic.
The expansive Weather set showcases the meteorologists and provides ample space from which they can track and present current weather data.
The Multi-Purpose Area features modular monitor cart assemblies that can be arranged to create numerous distinct looks within the set.
The design is all about clean lines and concise backgrounds so that the talent is always the primary focus of the newscast, while at the same time providing a clean canvas on which to present the day’s news. The finishes are a combination of polished metals and gloss laminates balanced with light wood tones so that the end result is clean and modern. Branding references are brought about through the use of arcs, inspired by the “8”, in the printed graphics.
