A Mixed Bag at EIJ13

FX and Giant Octopus just returned from EIJ13 (Excellence in Journalism Conference) in Anaheim.  The exhibition floor was much larger this year and filled with mostly recruiters.  That was a very good thing as a robust turnout from NAHJ had long lines of young journalists waiting to get that initial interview.  This year, the combination of NAHJ (National Assoc. of Hispanic Journalists), SPJ  (Society of Professional Journalists) and RTDNA (Radio Television, Digital News Association) brought the attendance to 1,665 according to TVNewsCheck.

We enjoyed seeing News Directors and did have some very positive meetings. But, we missed a lot of friends and clients since there were only 160 members for RTDNA. We love seeing you, so we will keep our fingers crossed that Nashville will be a better turnout for next year. TVNewsCheck reports, “The third annual Excellence in Journalism 2013 conference drew 1,665 individuals Saturday through Monday (Aug. 24-26) in Anaheim, Calif. — nearly twice as many as last year — but only about 160, or 10%, of the attendees were members of the Radio Television Digital News Association, one of the three sponsoring journalism groups.”

The big bonus was the exciting curriculum and energized base of NAHJ attendees. This is a growing, dynamic organization that will unfortunately split with RTDNA next year for its own conference in San Antonio. http://latinoreporter.org/san-antonio-to-host-nahj-2014/. We intend to follow this organization rigorously with support, as we have RTDNA all these years.
One of the highlights of EIJ13 was the CNNnewsSource sponsored opening night bowling party. Good food. Good hosts. Good drinks. And, Good Socks.  Thanks to CNNnewssource for an outstanding event.

Oh, and there was an outstanding Mariachi group.

We were in a booth with our friends from Baron Systems and jointly we hosted hospitality events for all attendees. We billed it as Mack’s Famous Margaritas, and boy did he deliver. Key Lime, Guava Strawberry, Raspberry, his signature Honey Lime.  Mack’s Margaritas are indeed becoming famous. Thanks everyone for sharing a drink and conversation with us.

We loved the fun at EIJ13, but it really is all about business. We talked to news directors looking at new sets for 2014, but some who are still pushing for new sets in this calendar year. The ideas, design and creativity were flowing and our team reached out in many ways . . . even setting up conference calls from the floor with others back home. To all those current FX and Giant Octopus customers, we appreciated your insight and feedback. Here’s to EIJ14 in Nashville.
